Letting Go

The Wisdom of Leaves

A month ago, in autumn, I watched the leaves falling from the trees. Each one was different: yellow, red, brown, orange, black, still green. A mosaic of colours telling a single truth: life is always changing.

Trees have known this for thousands of years.

And they do not resist it. They do not cling to their leaves for fear of losing them. They do not try to hold on because “they were once beautiful”. They do not judge the change; they move with it.

Leaves do not change all at once.

First they turn red, then yellow, then brown. Each stage has its own language, its own step, its own rhythm.

Transformation is not a mistake. It is life’s way of preparing the ground for what will come next.

We too move through inner seasons. Sometimes we insist on staying green when we are already red inside, or on remaining red when it is time to let go, because we believe that being consistent means never changing.

Trees do not resist the flow. They welcome every change of colour as part of the journey.

When its leaves fall, a tree does not become less itself. It does not lose its identity. It simply makes space, grows lighter and places its trust in the process.

There is a quiet, peaceful strength in this gesture: the knowledge that what falls is never wasted.

We, on the other hand, fear emptiness, separation and endings. We fear that if we let something go, we will lose an essential part of ourselves.

But nature whispers a different truth: what falls can nourish.

Once they reach the ground, leaves are not simply lost. They become shelter. They protect roots from winter frost and offer refuge to small animals in hibernation. Then they become nourishment, turning into the soil from which the tree will grow again.

The same thing happens within us.

What we let go of—a relationship, a role, a habit, an idea of who we are—does not disappear. It changes form. It becomes compost. It creates fertile space for something more authentic, something more truly our own.

Nothing in letting go is wasted. Even pain, when we allow ourselves to feel it, can become humus.

Trees are in no hurry to turn green again. They allow themselves time for rest, silence and emptiness. They know that every season has a purpose.

They let fall what must fall, protect their roots with what remains and wait for what is new.

There is ancient wisdom in this simplicity: life takes nothing from us that cannot be reborn in another form.

Letting Go So We Can Bloom Again

When we stop holding on to what is no longer alive, when we allow our “inner leaves” to fall, we find space to breathe.

And space to grow.

Trees remind us that letting go is not the end, but an act of trust. It is the invisible bridge between who we have been and who we may become.

Because every falling leaf prepares the ground for a spring we cannot yet see… but which is already beginning to stir within us.
